Tracks & Traces
2024
I take pleasure in recognizing quirks in the cityscape. The strangeness I find is a secret between me and that place; a detail that only a few notice. A fleeting glitch in an otherwise perfected system. Nowadays these quirks are even less frequent, making discovering them even more rewarding. The urban environment is quite clinical and there is little room for imperfections on the streets. It seems that someone else besides me must be keeping an eye on the discrepancies, correcting them before we even notice.
That's why I always get excited when I encounter something “extra” or “waste” in the urban space that doesn’t have any visible purpose. Throughout this spring and summer I’ve been collecting these abandoned materials; tiles and stones that have come loose from the pavement, metal scraps found along the railway, crumpled receipts, a used grill grate and old windows without an owner.
The "Tracks & Traces" exhibition showcases the materials I have salvaged from the cityscape and then molded into my creation. After the exhibition I will return my findings to their original locations and surrender them back to the urban environment. Will these quirks be removed, or will they find their own place within the urban space?
Exhibited at Asbestos Art Space in 2024.
